The Law of Consecration &
Newton’s Cradle
The Law of Consecration is you would give everything to the Lord, all your time and talents and everything you possess. Does this negate the law of for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction or the law of justice?
I read a book recently where the saints were called by the prophet to gather at the ward building and bring all their food storage with them, leave their houses and their cars and go to camps in the mountains. It is a difficult decision for people will they follow the prophet and “gather”? My friend says this is beautiful; everyone is equal and gives all they have to the good of all. She would share all that she has with the group. For her it would be a beautiful experience of loving everyone.
I ask W about this and she explained what happened at the Gathering Place when management changed the rules of how tips were distributed. The old way had been the tips you make the night you work were given to each employee. The new way was to pool all tips for the month and then divide them equally. This was very upsetting to at least J and K and W. Some night employees put up many tables and served a complete dinner, some other shifts there was just a desert served. They knew some shifts required much more work than other shifts and equal distribution of tips was not fair. Who would want to work the hard shifts why not just work the easy shifts and get as much money. The purpose for working was to make money and the more you put into it the more you should earn. Equal pay for different amounts of work was not fair.
Newton’s Cradle is some steel balls hung by string and when you pull back on the ball on one side it swings back and knocks the ball out on the opposite side. It shows that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is a law of physics. More gas the engine works harder and faster and the speed increases. Basically the more you put into an action the more you get out of it. Little expended little returned, Much put into an action more returned.
The Law of the harvest is he who plants and works the soil and waters and weeds is he who reaps the crop. With the help of God you could reap the seeds you sew.
America has been the land of opportunity. Citizens could work hard and reap the fruits of their labors and ask for the blessings of God to help them in their labors and go through tribulation but reap abundance.
So the Law of Consecration is God’s Law of the best living. Give everything to God and trust Him to care for you. The Lord warns us that it is difficult for the rich man to get into Heaven it is like going through the eye of the needle. The camel must unload his pack and crawl through on his knees.
I have always believed that there must be a reason to do good. That the law of Justice held that if you do good you will reap good. Cast your bread on the water and it will come back magnified. Pay your tithing and the Lord will open the windows of heaven. You receive blessings for doing good and do all the good that you can and the Lord will greatly bless you.
H says she could give up her house easily because she believes the Lord would not put her out in the cold and move some do nothing person into her house. She says Trust the Lord to take care of you.
Food storage has always been important to me. I have even given my young kids powdered milk for their birthday present. It has been a priority to have food storage and some investments and money in savings.
Would the Lord ask me to give all and make everyone equal?
Zion says there were no poor among them. I want to help others but will it be by prophet mandate. Everyone must give everything they have to the pot and everyone draws out equally.
I want the opportunity and the Lord’s blessing on my efforts to prepare for when and if food storage would be needed and the opportunity to willing share not by commandment to share but by Do unto others as you would have loves do to you and Love you neighbor and do good to those who despitefully use you. I want the opportunity to prepare and to give and share and grow by learning more about mercy and the gift of charity the greatest love comes from God to me. - Can I then love others?
Eternity and Temple covenants are so connected with family. Love is so connected with family. In my life I have been a mother and a grandmother. I want to have the opportunity of sharing first with those I love and care about the most-My family. God is my Heavenly Father. We are sealed to our families. I prepare because I want to be able to take care of first of all my family. They are always on my mind in storing up for what they might need in hard times in the future. Daily they now are concerned about me and V and we are daily concerned about them. Each has different needs and help is never equal.
If all efforts are pooled together and given out equally is there any incentive to prepare abundantly?
I know I too am a beggar dependant on God for every breath, for life, for strength, for family, for all things. May I return even part of the goodness He gives to me. I want to love the Lord with all my heart, might , mind and strength and trust him.

  1. The Prophet NEVER commands us. He counsels us to follow because the Lord said, "Whether by mine own voice, or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." I believe that Pres. Monson IS the prophet of God, so therefore I BELIEVE his is the voice of my Heavenly Father. The book is fiction, and we don't know if that is the way things would be, but there is precedent for it when Brigham Young asked the saints to follow him out west. People had to have a testimony that Brigham Young was then the mouthpiece of the Lord to follow him into an unknown wilderness. I just know that the people who didn't have that witness, or who chose to ignore it and stay behind, really didn't prosper in things eternal. They may have lived in relative peace in this life with their families, but I wonder if they are together now after death? And, what about their posterity who grew up without a knowledge of the gospel because of their ancestors choice NOT to follow the prophet then. Think of that posterity trying to navigate this wicked world without that knowledge today! Another president is the story of the Prophet Elijah and the widow!

I know that IF the prophet asked me I WOULD give everything and just like the widow in Elijah's day, I KNOW the Lord would keep my family fed whether I give to undeserving people or not! Kathryn, no one will stay with the saints, or live in Zion that are not pure in heart. (And, only the pure in heart will EVER see God!) People in the world working at a restaurant sharing tips are probably almost certainly NOT pure in heart. Of course it's not fair, when people aren't pure THEY aren't fair, but we are told that in Zion not only will there be no poor among us, but that also there will NOT be those who do not work for their bread. Everyone will be busy and contributing in Zion. The scenerio in the book would simply be a great weeding out process, and during that process I just don't think we can worry about who deserves what. We really CAN trust the Lord and let Him do the weeding and dividing. King Benjamin teaches us this in his sermon in Mosiah before he died. -We really cannot judge another's heart and it's so much simpler to just trust the Lord! A great book to read on Zion is Hugh Nibley's "Approaching Zion." (Though I don't quite agree with everything he says, it is powerful food for thought and self reflection.) Also, the main reason the Saints were driven out of Missouri was because they would not share with the poor and bickered one with another, probably and mostly about "what is mine!"

Kathryn I love you! Of course we first turn our thoughts to our own family, but I have to really believe that if Zion is to be on earth ready to receive the Savior, then we WILL live the law of consecration! We've already covenanted to do that in T. The book wasn't threatening to me, but reassuring and comforting that I am in the Kingdom of God on earth, led by a prophet who I REALLY believe will guide us to places of refuge; whether as families in our own homes in Salt Lake, or in the mountains, or on the road to Zion! And, I am going to follow his counsel!

  4. I recently received the following email from a friend, though a bit political, I think it fits here because it identifies clearly this worldly attitude which so many in our worldly world obviously have!

THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER - This one is a little different... Two
    Different Versions! Two Different Morals!

OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building
his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool
and laughs and dances and plays the summer away, smelling the roses, and simply enjoying life.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why
the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth,
this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front
of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, 'We shall overcome.'
Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens tobe the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2010.

And I add, I know, and testify that our Savior will return in Glory to the earth! To quote a Prophet of the Lord, President Ezra Taft Bensen:

“And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” (D&C 45:28–30; italics added.)

We will know when the times of the Gentiles are approaching fulfillment by these signs:

“And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.

“And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound.” (D&C 45:26–27.)

“And again, this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come, or the destruction of the wicked” (JST, Matt. 24:32).

Sorry, this is a great article by President Bensen, and I have a bit more...

  5. Are we not witnessing the fulfillment of these signs today? The gospel is being extended to all nations which permit our missionaries to penetrate their countries. The Church is prospering and growing. Yet in undiminished fury, and with an anxiety that his time is short—and it is—Satan, that great adversary to all men, is attempting to destroy all we hold dear. The greatest system of slavery ever devised by the forces of evil—communism—has been imposed on over one billion of the earth’s inhabitants. We constantly hear or read of wars and rumors of wars. Atheism, agnosticism, immorality, and dishonesty are flaunted in our society. Desertions, cruelty, divorce, and infidelity have become commonplace, leading to a disintegration of the family. Truly we live in the times of which the Savior spoke, when “the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound.”

The rejection of the testimony of the servants of God by the nations of the world will bring the consequence of greater calamities, for the Lord himself declared:

“For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand.

“And also cometh the testimony of the voice of thunderings, and the voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and the voice of the waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds.

“And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men’s hearts shall fail them, for fear shall come upon all people.” (D&C 88:89–91.)

“And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.

“But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.

“And there shall be earthquakes also in divers places, and many desolations; yet men will harden their hearts against me, and they will take up the sword, one against another, and they will kill one another.” (D&C 45:31–33.)

The world will present a scene of conflict such as has never been experienced before. Still, men’s hearts will be hardened to the revelations from heaven. Even greater signs shall then be given to manifest the approaching great day of the Lord.

“And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath.

“And they shall behold blood, and fire, and vapors of smoke.

“And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven.” (D&C 45:40–42.)

I realize this is an unpleasant topic on which to dwell. I take no delight in its portrayal, nor do I look forward to the day when calamities shall come upon mankind. But these words are not my own; the Lord has spoken them. Knowing what we know as His servants, can we hesitate to raise a warning voice to all who will listen that they may be prepared for the days ahead? Silence in the face of such calamity is sin!

But to an otherwise gloomy picture there is a bright side—the coming of our Lord in all His glory. His coming will be both glorious and terrible, depending on the spiritual condition of those who remain…

  6. You will live in the midst of economic, political and spiritual instability. When you see these signs—unmistakable evidences that His coming is nigh—be not troubled, but, “stand … in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come” (D&C 87:8). Holy men stand in holy places and these holy places include our temples, our chapels, our homes, and the stakes of Zion, which are, as the Lord declares, “for a defense, and for a refuge from the storm, and from wrath when it shall be poured out without mixture upon the whole earth” (D&C 115:6).

Heed the Lord’s counsel to the Saints of this dispensation: “Prepare yourselves for the great day of the Lord” (D&C 133:10).

This preparation must consist of more than just casual membership in the Church. You must learn to be guided by personal revelation and the counsel of the living prophet so you will not be deceived. Our Lord has indicated who, among Church members, will stand when He appears:

“And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins.

“For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.

“And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.

“For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.” (D&C 45:56–59; italics added.)

President Wilford Woodruff further prophesied in 1894:

“Can you tell me where the people are who will be shielded and protected from these great calamities and judgments which are even now at our door? I’ll tell you. The priesthood of God who honor their priesthood and who are worthy of their blessings are the only ones who shall have this safety and protection. They are the only mortal beings. No other people have a right to be shielded from these judgments. They are at our doors; not even this people will escape them entirely.” (Wilford Woodruff, Young Women’s Journal, 5:512, June 1894.)

If you are to preserve your blessings, it is not enough for you to just be free and independent, to capitalize on your advantages so that they accrue to your well-being and prosperity. You must protect and safeguard the freedom you have. You must be wise and virtuous. You must govern your natures by the doctrines of His kingdom. You must be valiant in your testimony of Christ, by keeping all His commandments.
Will you be among those who are faithful to the end? Will you endure? Are you prepared? Can you live in the world and not partake of the sins of the world? Will you “arise and shine forth” as the Lord has commanded? Will you be a light and “standard for the nations”? We know you can.
(Ezra Taft Benson, “Prepare Yourself for the Great Day of the Lord,” New Era, May 1982, 44)
